7th Kansas Cavalry Regiment
The 7th Kansas Cavalry Regiment, known as Jennison's Jayhawkers, was a Union cavalry unit that served in the Civil War. It was organized at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, on October 28, 1861, and served for three years under Colonel Charles R. Jennison. The regiment mustered out at Fort Leavenworth on September 29, 1865.
During its service, the 7th Kansas Cavalry was moved through several commands, starting in the Department of Kansas and later serving with the Army of the Mississippi, the XIII and XVI Corps, and finally in the District of St. Louis and the Department of Kansas. Its assignments included periods with the 2nd and 1st Cavalry Divisions of the XVI Corps and postings in the Districts of Corinth, West Tennessee, and St. Louis.
The regiment fought in several key battles. It saw action at the Battle of Iuka (with Companies B and E) and the Battle of Corinth in 1862. In 1864, it participated in Price’s Raid across Missouri and Kansas, including the battles of Mine Creek, the Little Blue River, Independence, and Byram’s Ford, along with related engagements such as the Big Blue and other actions during the pursuit.
Casualties for the regiment totaled 223 men: 3 officers and 55 enlisted men were killed or mortally wounded, and 1 officer and 164 enlisted men died of disease.
