2025 Herat road crash
On 19 August 2025, around 8:30 p.m. Afghanistan time, a passenger bus overloaded with deported migrants from Iran crashed in Guzara District, Herat Province. The bus hit a motorcycle and a fuel truck head-on, then left the road and caught fire. The bus was traveling toward Kabul as part of a government effort to move Afghans from Iran. Police said high speed and negligence contributed to the crash. At least 79 people were killed, including 19 children, and two were injured. Most victims were on the bus. Firefighters worked through the night to extinguish the flames. The Taliban government ordered an investigation, and by 20 August authorities said they had arrested the head of the transport business involved.
