Grits (novel)

Grits is the debut novel by British author Niall Griffiths, published in 2000 by Jonathan Cape. It is set in and around Aberystwyth, Wales, and looks at promiscuity, drugs, alcohol, and petty crime. The book earned Griffiths the nickname “the Welsh Irvine Welsh” for its raw, vivid portrayal of tough, messy life. The novel is largely autobiographical: Griffiths moved to Aberystwyth to research a PhD in post-war British poetry but soon became an enthusiastic partygoer and dropped out. A character named Ianto appears briefly in Grits and later becomes the anti-hero of Griffiths’s second novel, Sheepshagger.
