Letitia James Wins 2018 New York Attorney General Election
The election was held on November 6, 2018. Letitia James, the New York City Public Advocate and a Democrat, won, becoming the first woman and the first African American to be elected New York Attorney General.
Background: The previous attorney general, Eric Schneiderman, resigned in May 2018 after domestic abuse allegations. Barbara Underwood, the solicitor general, was appointed to finish Schneiderman’s term but did not run for a full term in 2018.
Primary: James won the Democratic nomination on September 13, 2018, defeating Leecia Eve, Sean Patrick Maloney, and Zephyr Teachout.
General election: James faced Republican Keith Wofford and won decisively, with about 62% of the vote to Wofford’s roughly 35% (around 3.74 million votes for James and 2.11 million for Wofford). She carried most counties and won 23 of 27 congressional districts, including several districts that elected Republicans in other races.
