2012 storm in southern Uruguay

In September 2012, a strong extratropical cyclone swept across southern Uruguay from September 18 to 19. It affected coastal departments along the River Plate and Atlantic coasts, including Colonia, San José, Montevideo, Canelones, Maldonado, and Rocha. Punta del Este recorded the strongest winds at 172 km/h, with notable gusts in Montevideo (about 122 km/h) and Laguna del Sauce (120 km/h). The storm caused floods and led the government to close public buildings, suspend transport, and urge people in Montevideo and other coastal areas to stay at home. Schools were not in session during the spring holiday week. Three people died in San José due to flooding, and the event was part of the sudestada pattern affecting nearby countries.
