2011 Setanta Sports Cup: Shamrock Rovers win first title
The 2011 Setanta Sports Cup was the sixth edition of the cross-border football competition for clubs from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. It ran from 14 February to 14 May 2011, with the draw held at Belfast City Hall on 13 December 2010. The tournament expanded to 12 teams, and the four highest-ranked sides received byes into the quarter-finals. It used a two-leg knockout format, except for the final.
Sporting Fingal withdrew for financial reasons and were replaced by UCD.
First round: Four League of Ireland teams and four IFA Premiership teams played two-legged ties. The winners were Dundalk, Distillery, Cliftonville and Portadown, who joined the four seeded teams Shamrock Rovers, Sligo Rovers, Crusaders and Glentoran in the quarter-finals.
Quarter-finals: The ties were two-legged, with Dundalk, Cliftonville, Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers advancing to the semi-finals with aggregate scores of 2–1, 10–6, 7–2 and 5–0 respectively.
Semi-finals: Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers won their semi-final ties on aggregate to reach the final.
Final: The final was held on 14 May 2011 at Tallaght Stadium, where Shamrock Rovers defeated Dundalk to win the Setanta Cup for the first time.
Tournament stats: 21 matches were played and 69 goals were scored (about 3.29 per game). The competition featured 12 teams. Defending champions were Bohemians; Shamrock Rovers were the champions and Dundalk the runners-up.
