2003 Rugby World Cup – Oceania qualification
Qualifying for the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Oceania had several rounds. Fiji and Samoa claimed direct spots, joining automatic qualifiers Australia and New Zealand; Tonga went to the repechage.
In the early round, six Small Islands teams were split into Western and Eastern pools of three. Each pool played each other once, and the pool winners moved on to Round 3.
In Round 2, the three major Pacific nations—Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga—played a round robin. The top two qualified directly for the World Cup as Oceania 1 and Oceania 2: Fiji finished first and Samoa second. Tonga finished last and entered Round 4.
Round 3 had the Round 1 pool winners face each other in home-and-away matches to decide who would advance to Round 4.
In Round 4, Papua New Guinea (the Round 3 winner) faced Tonga (the Round 2 third-placed team). The winner earned a place in the repechage. Tonga won 131–26 on aggregate and moved to the repechage, where they faced South Korea.
