Atan Burhagohain, also known as Bahgaria Atan Burhagohain, was the Ahom Kingdom’s premier from January 1662 until his death in March 1679. He was a trusted minister and skilled general who played a key role in resisting the Mughal invasions.

Appointed after the previous head of the office was removed for not fighting the Mughals, Atan Burhagohain led the kingdom’s defence during tough times when Mir Jumla attacked. He helped plan the Ahom response, negotiated important agreements, and worked to rebuild the kingdom after early setbacks.

He is best known for his leadership in the Battle of Saraighat, where the Ahom forces defeated the Mughals. From his base at Lathia Parvat, he commanded the northern division of the army and used guerrilla tactics and spies to strike the enemy and disrupt their plans. He was also a capable administrator and overseer of fortifications and preparations for war.

As a statesman, Atan Burhagohain strengthened the kingdom’s administration. After Gauhati was retaken, he ordered fortifications on both banks of the Brahmaputra, ensured provisions and troops were ready, and reorganized Kamrup’s civil administration. He appointed local officers to manage land revenue and maintain order, building a solid administrative foundation for the Ahom state.

Chakradhwaj Singha made him Prime Minister, recognizing his wisdom and skill. He was offered the Ahom throne on two occasions during turmoil, but he refused, staying loyal to the king and the kingdom. His work and counsel earned him a reputation as a brilliant diplomat and strategist.

Sadly, Atan Burhagohain was murdered in 1679 by the henchmen of Laluk Sola Borphukan, during a period of court intrigue. He is remembered for his foresight, loyalty, and crucial role in defending the Ahom realm and shaping its administration.
