The 1996 Wigan RLFC season was the club’s 101st and the first in the new Super League. Coached by Graeme West and based at Central Park, Wigan finished second in Super League I with a 19–1–2 record, scoring 902 and conceding 326.

In the Premiership Final at Old Trafford they beat St Helens to win the title, and they also won the final staging of the League Cup, defeating St Helens 25–16.

In the Challenge Cup they were knocked out in the fifth round by Salford Reds, the first time since 1987 they failed to win the trophy.

Chairman: Jack Robinson. Captaincy saw Shaun Edwards lead early in the season, with Andy Farrell appointed captain in July.

The season was a shortened transitional year ahead of the switch to the summer Super League. Wigan were the reigning league champions for a seventh straight year and added the final League Cup to their honours.

During the season they played a two-game series against Bath: Wigan won the league game 82–6 at Maine Road but lost the union game 44–19 at Twickenham. They also won the Middlesex Sevens, a rugby union sevens tournament.
