Swansea Bay is a region in Wales used for planning by the Welsh Government and other organisations. Its boundaries, defined in the Wales Spatial Plan Data Project, cover Swansea and Neath Port Talbot and parts of Carmarthenshire, Powys and Bridgend. It is also a travel-to-work area (defined in 2007) and includes 21 key settlements. The population was about 561,900 in 2007. The plan has seen Swansea Bay proposed as a city region centered on Swansea, with nearby towns such as Llanelli, Neath, Port Talbot, Ystradgynlais and Ammanford. After a 2012 report, the Swansea Bay city region was established on 18 July 2013. The city region includes Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot and Swansea. Sir Terry Matthews was appointed chairman of the Swansea Bay City Region Board. The area sits around 51.58°N, 3.90°W.
