1996 Southern Miss Golden Eagles football

The 1996 Southern Miss Golden Eagles represented the University of Southern Mississippi in the 1996 NCAA Division I-A football season. Led by seventh-year head coach Jeff Bower, they played home games at M. M. Roberts Stadium. In the first season of Conference USA, Southern Miss finished 8–3 overall and 4–1 in conference play, sharing the league title with Houston. The offense was coordinated by Norman Joseph (third year) and ran a multiple scheme, while the defense, led by John Thompson (fifth year), used a multiple base defense.
