Jimmy the Chimp
Jimmy the Chimp (1952–1968) was a male chimpanzee trained by actor and magician John Calvert. He was born in Portuguese East Africa (now Mozambique) around 1952 and was captured to work with Calvert.
Jimmy acted in the 1956 film Dark Venture with Calvert and later appeared in Calvert’s magic shows and on his luxury yacht as they toured Asia and Australia. Calvert sometimes claimed Jimmy was the same chimp who played Cheeta in Tarzan films, but that was not true—the Tarzan movies had ended in 1948.
Dark Venture was filmed in East Africa in 1953 but released in 1956. After filming, Calvert brought Jimmy to California to work with him. In 1957 they began a Pacific tour on the Sea Fox, performing in Honolulu, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines, and finally reaching Darwin, Australia in June 1959.
By then Jimmy was almost fully grown and difficult to manage on board. Darwin officials would not allow him ashore, so Calvert kept him on the boat. When the Sea Fox reached Sydney, Taronga Park Zoo agreed to take Jimmy.
In July 1959 the Sea Fox was lost at sea; pumps failed and the boat had to be towed to Elcho Island. The Indigenous people on Elcho Island were amazed by Calvert’s tricks and by Jimmy, and they even included the chimp in rock art. Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, an Indigenous musician who visited Elcho Island, reportedly nicknamed his drummer after Jimmy.
Calvert later left Jimmy on Elcho Island before Taronga Zoo rescued him. Sir Edward Hallstrom of Taronga Park Zoo helped bring Jimmy to Sydney. The Sea Fox was repaired by salvage expert Carl Atkinson and returned to Darwin.
Jimmy lived at Taronga Park Zoo from 1959 to 1962, then moved to the Perth Zoo after he failed to breed with female chimpanzees. He died in May 1968 at about 16 years old, from a heart attack, probably related to smoking. His skull and death mask are kept at the Western Australian Museum.
