The 1987 Canadian Soccer League season was the league’s first season. It used two divisions of four teams each: East (National Capital Pioneers, Hamilton Steelers, Toronto Blizzard, North York Rockets) and West (Calgary Kickers, Edmonton Brick Men, Vancouver 86ers, Winnipeg Fury).

Format and schedule
- The league played an unbalanced schedule to ease travel. Each team played its division opponents four times (home and away twice) and the teams in the other division twice (one home, one away) for a total of 20 games.
- The top three teams from each division made the playoffs, with the division leaders getting a first-round bye to the later rounds.
