The 1982 season was the Rams’ 45th in the NFL and 37th in Los Angeles. They hoped to improve on their 6–10 record from 1981, but a players’ strike shortened the season from 16 games to 9. The team started 0–2 before the strike, then won at home against the Kansas City Chiefs after the strike, where quarterback Bert Jones injured his neck and ended his season and career.
The Rams lost four straight after that win but beat the 49ers in San Francisco in the season finale. They finished 2–7, last in the NFC and the worst in the league, their worst showing since 1962. After the season, head coach Ray Malavasi was fired and replaced by John Robinson in 1983.
The Rams signed free-agent Bert Jones and saw Vince Ferragamo return from the CFL, with Pat Haden retired, leaving Jones and Ferragamo to compete for the starting job, with Jones starting the opener.
