1962 African Cup of Nations
1962 African Cup of Nations
The third edition of Africa's continental football championship was hosted by Ethiopia from 14 to 21 January. Nine nations entered, including defending champions United Arab Republic (UAR). For the first time, a qualification tournament was needed. The hosts Ethiopia and the UAR qualified automatically for the finals, and Sudan and Morocco withdrew before play, leaving five teams contending for the remaining two final spots. The finals featured four teams: Ethiopia, UAR, Tunisia and Uganda.
The matches were played in a single host city at one venue. Ethiopia won the title for the first time, defeating the UAR 4–2 after extra time in the final. The tournament had four matches and 18 goals in total (an average of 4.5 per game). The top scorers were Badawi Abdel Fattah and Luciano Vassallo, with 3 goals each. Mengistu Worku was named the best player.
