1940 NFL All-Star Game (December)
The 1940 NFL All-Star Game (December) was the league’s third all-star game. It pitted the Chicago Bears, the 1940 champions, against a team of NFL All-Stars. The game was played on December 29, 1940, at Gilmore Stadium in Los Angeles before about 21,000 fans. Stanford and Nebraska players were in attendance because they were preparing for the Rose Bowl, and Nebraska used the game to study the Bears’ T-formation.
The Bears, coached by Luke Johnsos in place of the hospitalized George Halas, defeated the All-Stars 28–14. The All-Stars were coached by Ray Flaherty of the Washington Redskins. Referee was John Olds. There was no MVP awarded and the game was not televised.
The Bears were 8–5 favorites after their 73–0 championship win over the Redskins a few weeks earlier. In quarter play, the Bears scored 7 points in each quarter, while the All-Stars scored 0 in the first, 14 in the second, and 0 in the third and fourth.
Ace Parker of the Brooklyn Dodgers was voted into the game but declined to participate due to injuries. NFL President Carl Storck warned him about possible expulsion, but Dodgers owner Dan Topping pulled him out, and Parker later played two charity games in Virginia.
