The 1938 United States Senate election in Illinois was held on November 8, 1938. Incumbent Democrat William H. Dieterich retired after one term. Democrat Scott W. Lucas won the seat, defeating Republican Richard J. Lyons by 51.32% to 48.33% (Lucas: 1,638,162 votes; Lyons: 1,542,574 votes). Lucas succeeded Dieterich as U.S. senator. Primaries were on April 12, 1938, and the elections were held at the same time as other House and state contests.
