1927–28 Colby Mules men's ice hockey season
The Colby Mules, an independent team playing at Colby Rink, finished the year 3–3–1. Head coach was Eddie Roundy, in his fourth season, with Bill Millett as an assistant. Team captain was Dick Drummond, and J. Lewis Lovett served as team manager. The season started with several veterans not reporting. Carlson was ill in December, and Scott and Tattersall initially chose not to join. Captain Drummond helped bring back Scott and most of the former players, and Carlson returned to the lineup by mid‑January for the first game.
Season highlights and key moments:
- Opening game vs. Bates ended in a lengthy overtime thriller, with Eddie Sturhahn scoring the game‑winner after more than an hour of play.
- A week later, New Hampshire visited and handed Colby a defeat; Scott sustained a head injury and was out for the rest of the game.
- The Mules then dominated the Brunswick Cabots (an amateur club), 8–1, with Sturhahn recording a hat‑trick and contributions from Drummond, Thiel, and Pommerleau.
- In the return game against Bates, Colby again required overtime. Scott returned to help, and Drummond set up Sturhahn for the go‑ahead goal in the third overtime, securing the win.
- After a bye for exams, Colby faced Bowdoin and played inconsistently; the top line of Sturhahn, Scott and Drummond struggled with teamwork, and Bowdoin dominated much of the match.
- Against Acadia (Nova Scotia), a lineup change helped Colby settle, with Scanlon shifting to the wing and Sturhahn moving to center. Tattersall opened the scoring, Colby built a 2‑goal lead, but heavy snow slowed play and the game ended in a draw after overtime.
- In a late‑season game with the state championship at stake, Colby again rearranged the lineup. Sturhahn scored twice, but Bowdoin answered with two goals in the second period and Colby could not respond.
A week later, Bowdoin defeated Bates, ending Colby’s chances for at least a share of the title. The season concluded with Colby holding a 3–3–1 record, and the team’s performance over the year showed signs of progress after a rocky start. Note: primary assists were not consistently recorded.
