1902 College Football All-Southern Team
1902 College Football All-Southern Team was a group of players chosen by various organizations for the 1902 SIAA season. Clemson won the SIAA championship, though Virginia was often ranked as the best team in the South.
The first All-Southern team on record appears in Fuzzy Woodruff’s A History of Southern Football. Woodruff notes that the earliest selections backed by real consideration were made by W. Reynolds Tichenor, a former Auburn quarterback and longtime football official. Tichenor’s chosen eleven appear in the book, with markers such as Bold for Tichenor’s picks, WRT for Tichenor’s selections, and WA for selections by W. A. Reynolds. Other notations include AC for the Atlanta Constitution, JLD for UVA coach John L. DeSaulles (who also listed substitutes), H for John Heisman, and WAL for W. A. Lambeth of Collier’s Weekly (which published a first and second team). Substitutes are indicated with an S.
