Down Home (Sam Jones album)
Down Home is the third album by Sam Jones, a jazz double bass player and cellist. It was recorded in New York City on June 25 and August 15–16, 1962, and released in 1962 on the Riverside label (RLP 432). The 39-minute-26-second album was produced by Orrin Keepnews. All of the compositions were written by Jones. In his discography, it follows The Chant (1961) and precedes Seven Minds (1974).
Critics praised the album. AllMusic’s Scott Yanow called it “excellent hard bop-based music,” The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings noted that Jones “improvises against the grain of the orchestra to telling effect,” and Billboard called it “a fine showcase for Jones.”
