Lagoa do Ouro
Lagoa do Ouro (Golden Pond) is a city in the state of Pernambuco in northeast Brazil, about 263 km west of Recife.
History
In the early 1900s, Captain Amador José Monteiro presented a plan to the Correntes Municipal Council. The council met on February 9, 1902, approved the village’s first fair, and considered the name Igatauá. On December 9, 1938, the name was changed to Lagoa do Ouro after a local legend about gold nuggets in a pond on the estate of João Alves da Silva, who was known as John Gold.
Geography and people
Lagoa do Ouro covers about 199 square kilometers and sits around 653 meters above sea level. The climate is tropical savanna (Aw). As of 2020, about 13,000 people live there, with a population density of roughly 66 per square kilometer.
Government
The mayor is Marquidoves Viera Marques, from the Brazilian Socialist Party.
Economy
The economy is based on agribusiness. Main crops are beans, manioc and corn, and the area raises livestock such as cattle, sheep and poultry.
Conservation
Part of the Pedra Talhada Biological Reserve, a protected area created in 1989, lies within the municipality.
