1884 VFA season
1884 VFA season
Geelong were premiers for the sixth time in seven seasons, and the third straight title in the 1882–1884 run. The season ran from 3 May to 27 September 1884, with eight clubs competing in the Victorian Football Association.
Geelong won 22 of 25 matches and drew 1. Essendon finished second with 16 wins and 2 draws from 24 games, and Hotham finished third.
The league expanded from six to eight clubs: Williamstown joined after merging with Battery United, and the Fitzroy Football Club was newly established and joined. Three provincial clubs—Ballarat, South Ballarat (formerly Albion Imperial), and Horsham Unions—were members on the Board of Management but played too few matches against the main Victorian clubs to be important for the premiership.
There was no formal ladder, and fixtures were not standardized; however, the top three placings were later acknowledged as official.
