The 1872 United States presidential election in Alabama took place on November 5, 1872. Voters chose ten electors for the Electoral College. The Republican candidate, Ulysses S. Grant from Illinois, with running mate Henry Wilson, defeated Liberal Republican Horace Greeley from New York, with running mate Benjamin G. Brown, by 53.19% to 46.81% — 90,272 votes to 79,444 votes. Grant received all 10 of Alabama’s electoral votes. This was the last time Alabama voted Republican until Barry Goldwater won the state in 1964. As of 2025, it is also the last time a Republican won a majority of votes in Macon County, home to Tuskegee Institute, a county that would become strongly Democratic in later years.
