12 Stones is an American rock band formed in 2000 in Mandeville, Louisiana. The group includes Paul McCoy (vocals), Richard Labranche, Sean Dunaway, Brian Selleck and Jon Rodriguez. They signed with Wind-up Records within about 15 months of forming.
Lead singer Paul McCoy later gained wider fame for his feature on Evanescence’s 2003 hit Bring Me to Life, which won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2004. Music from 12 Stones has appeared in films and TV shows, including My Life on The Scorpion King soundtrack (2002), Broken as the WWE Judgment Day theme (2002), Home for Kurt Angle’s WWE Desire video, Shadows in a Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest trailer, Photograph on the Elektra soundtrack, and Let Go for the Daredevil soundtrack. The songs Running out of Pain and Back Up were used in Cheating Death, Stealing Life – The Eddie Guerrero Story.
In 2009 the band started recording their fourth studio album with producer David Bendeth. The first single, We Are One, was released on April 6, 2010, after premiering on March 29, 2010. The track was used by WWE for The Nexus and opened the 2011 ACC men’s basketball tournament broadcasts; the Washington Capitals also used it at the start of home games in the 2010–11 season.
On August 24, 2010, 12 Stones left Wind-Up Records and signed with Executive Music Group. Beneath the Scars was released digitally on May 22, 2012 and in stores on May 29, 2012. Their fifth studio album, Picture Perfect, came out on July 14, 2017, with the title track premiering June 14, 2017. An EP, Smoke and Mirrors, Volume 1, was released on November 13, 2020.
Musically, 12 Stones has been described as post-grunge, nu metal, alternative rock and hard rock. Their songs often explore themes of good versus evil, faith and optimism. While sometimes labeled a Christian rock band, the members say their message is universal and not limited to one audience.
