Arthur Brady (politician)
Arthur Walker Brady (died 19 February 1954) was a Scottish politician. He rose to prominence with the Independent Labour Party in Irvine, serving on Irvine Town Council and Ayrshire County Council, where he chaired the Labour group. He was treasurer of the Scottish ILP Council. In 1931 he joined with Patrick Dollan and other ILP members who opposed the ILP’s move to disaffiliate from the Labour Party, and helped found the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP). The SSP aimed to carry on ILP policies while re-affiliating to Labour. Brady became the SSP’s general secretary and helped affiliate the group to Labour. He sat on the Scottish Council of Labour until the SSP dissolved in 1940, and later briefly served as Chairman of the Scottish Labour Party. In the 1935 general election he stood for Labour in Ayr Burghs, polling 13,274 votes but not winning. To administer the SSP, he moved to Glasgow and took part in city politics. In 1937 he was elected Secretary of Glasgow Trades and Labour Council. In 1942, when Labour split the secretary role from the trades council, Brady became secretary of the Glasgow Burgh Labour Party and left the trades council.
