Peeramon
Peeramon is a rural town and locality in the Tablelands Region of Queensland, Australia. It is about 5 km northeast of Malanda and around 70 km southwest of Cairns. The area covers about 28 square kilometres and had a population of 778 in 2021.
Mount Quincan rises in the northwest of Peeramon to 889 metres. The name Peeramon comes from an Aboriginal word for a local hill, and the name was given by the Queensland Railways Department in 1910.
Key historic points:
- Lake Eacham State School opened in 1911, became Peeramon State School in 1919, and closed in 1959. It was at 107 McKenzie Road.
- The Millaa Millaa branch railway opened in 1910, with Peeramon on the line between Yungaburra and Kureen. The Peeramon Hotel was a siding for this railway and remains the town’s landmark; its publican collects antique telephones. The hotel was damaged by Cyclone Larry in 2006.
- Peeramon Methodist Church opened in 1918.
Today:
- There are no schools in Peeramon. The nearest government primary schools are Yungaburra State School in Yungaburra (to the north) and Malanda State School in Malanda (to the south). The nearest government secondary school is Malanda State High School in Malanda.
