Paulo Freire Social Justice Charter School
Paulo Freire Social Justice Charter School was a public charter high school in Massachusetts. It started in Holyoke in 2013 and moved to Chicopee in 2019. The school mainly served students from Holyoke, Chicopee, Springfield, West Springfield, Westfield, and South Hadley, and was named after the Brazilian educator Paulo Freire.
In 2021, teachers and the UAW Local 2322 accused the school of union-busting after about half of the staff had their contracts non-renewed. In January 2023, the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education decided not to renew the school’s charter, and the school closed after the 2022-23 year. The board cited insufficient enrollment and financial challenges. The school closed on July 1, 2023.
During its years of operation, the school won two Western Massachusetts championships and one State Championship.
