Zeist
Zeist is the largest town in the municipality of Zeist, in the province of Utrecht, Netherlands. It is located east of the city of Utrecht and has about 51,000 residents. The town is known for its green forests and historic buildings.
History in brief
- Zeist was first mentioned in 838 as Seist, with the original settlement along Dorpsstraat.
- A church was built in the late 1100s; its tower is now part of the Reformed Church, and the rest was rebuilt in the 19th century.
- Nearby stood three mansions: Huis te Zeist, Kersbergen, and Blikkenburg.
- From 1677 to 1686, Slot Zeist was built near the old castle ruins in Dutch Classicist style; murals by Daniel Marot remain.
- In 1746, the Moravian Brethren settled in Zeist and built a group of 18th-century houses around two squares; their center is still in the town.
- In the 19th century Zeist became a popular residence for wealthy people from Utrecht.
- The town is ringed by forests.

Transport
