Yue Tze Nam
Yue Tze Nam (Chinese: 茹子楠), born 12 May 1998 in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong, is a professional footballer who plays as a right back for Beijing Guoan in the Chinese Super League and the Hong Kong national team. He is 1.70 m tall.
Early life and youth football
Yue was introduced to football by his father and started playing at age 4 near his home in Sai Ying Pun. At age 6, he joined the Orca Football Academy for formal training, and later played for the Little Nam Kwok academy, where he trained and competed with regional youth teams. In 2009, he received sponsorship from the club Eastern and began competing in Hong Kong youth competitions. He represented Hong Kong’s youth teams from 2011 and even served as a captain at times. He also faced a personal challenge when anorexia nervosa affected his growth and led to him missing Hong Kong’s 2014 U16 AFC Championship finals.
Education and overseas experiences
Yue attended Diocesan Boys’ School in Hong Kong and captained the school team to win the 2015 Hong Kong Inter-School Football Elite Championship. He later moved to the United Kingdom to study at Oswestry School, where he played for the school team and local amateur sides. He trained with Swansea City and drew interest from D.C. United. A potential transfer to The New Saints fell through because of work permit issues.
Club career
- Early career and Eastern: Yue returned to Hong Kong and, under the Sapling Cup rules, joined Eastern in the 2017–18 season. He made his professional debut on 29 October 2017 in a Sapling Cup match and the Hong Kong Premier League debut came on 14 April 2018. He spent the 2018–19 season mainly as a midfielder, facing stiff competition for game time.
- Loan and position change: In 2020–21, Yue was loaned to Resources Capital, where he played regularly, scored his first league goal, and contributed several assists. He returned to Eastern in 2021–22 and was converted to a right-back by coach Roberto Losada, becoming a regular starter.
- Move to Meizhou Hakka: In July 2022, Yue’s strong performances for Hong Kong at the EAFF Championship helped him attract attention from Meizhou Hakka in the Chinese Super League. He joined Meizhou in August 2022 on a three-and-a-half-year deal. In his first CSL season (2022), he made 17 appearances, scored 2 goals, and had 3 assists, delivering notable moments including a late winner against Henan and a 30-yard strike against Changchun Yatai.
In 2023, he remained a regular starter, playing 27 league matches with 1 goal and 1 assist. He continued to contribute in 2024 and 2025, including a very fast goal after 1 minute 28 seconds in March 2025 and a late long-range winner in October 2025. His contract with Meizhou ran through the end of 2025, and on 14 January 2026 he joined Beijing Guoan.
International career
Yue first earned a senior Hong Kong call-up in October 2018 under head coach Gary White and made his debut as a late substitute against Indonesia. He played for Hong Kong’s U23 team at the 2019 AFC U-23 Championship qualifiers. He has since represented Hong Kong in World Cup qualifying campaigns, the EAFF Championship finals in 2022, and the 2023 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. In 2025, he played in friendlies against Manchester United and featured in Hong Kong’s Asian Cup qualifying win at the Kai Tak Sports Park. He remains focused on continuing his international career and aspires to play in Europe one day.
