You've Made Me So Very Happy
You've Made Me So Very Happy is a song written by Brenda Holloway, Patrice Holloway, Frank Wilson, and Berry Gordy Jr. It was first released in August 1967 as Brenda Holloway’s Tamla (Motown) single, with “I've Got to Find It” as the B-side. It was recorded July 21, 1967, at Hitsville West in Los Angeles. Holloway, a Motown singer from Los Angeles, had tensions with the label, and her planned second album was shelved. This made “You've Made Me So Very Happy” her final Motown single. The song, co-written with her sister Patrice Holloway, Frank Wilson, and Gordy, was inspired by a breakup and included a clash over its arrangement during recording. It reached #39 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #40 on the R&B chart, and later appeared on her album The Artistry of Brenda Holloway. Afterward, Holloway left Motown, did backing vocals for other artists, and later retired to marry a preacher before returning to music in the mid-1990s.
In 1969, Blood, Sweat & Tears released a new arrangement of the song on their eponymous album. Produced by James William Guercio, their version runs 4:19 on the LP and 3:26 as a single. It became a major hit, reaching #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in April 1969 and earning a Gold record; it was kept from the top spot by Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In. In the UK, it reached #35 in May 1969. The song is credited to the same writers: Brenda Holloway, Patrice Holloway, Frank Wilson, and Berry Gordy Jr.
