Churchill (horse)
Churchill (foaled 31 January 2014) is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. A bay colt trained by Aidan O’Brien at Ballydoyle, he was sired by Galileo out of Meow. He was bred by Liberty Bloodstock and owned by Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith & Sue Magnier.
As a two-year-old in 2016, Churchill was Europe’s top juvenile, winning five of six starts: the Chesham Stakes, Tyros Stakes, Futurity Stakes, National Stakes and Dewhurst Stakes. He earned Cartier Champion Two-Year-Old Colt and was rated the best two-year-old in Europe that year.
In 2017, Churchill won the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and then the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh. He also raced in other top races, finishing fourth in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Ascot and second in the International Stakes at York.
He retired to Coolmore Stud at the end of 2017. His initial stud fee was €35,000, later reduced to €30,000 and then €25,000. He shuttles to Coolmore Australia from 2018. From his first crop of two-year-olds in 2021 he produced five black-type winners. In 2022 his son Vadeni won the Prix du Jockey Club, giving Churchill his first Group 1 winner as a sire.
Churchill was named Champion Two-Year-Old Colt at the Cartier Racing Awards in 2016 and was the top-rated European two-year-old that year. In the 2017 World's Best Racehorse Rankings, he was the 12th-best horse in the world and joint-best in Ireland.
