World School Sport Games
The Gymnasiade, also known as the World Gymnasiade or World School Sport Games, is the International School Sport Federation’s (ISF) biggest youth multi-sport event. It is open to athletes aged 13 to 18 and brings together teams from many countries to compete in several sports.
Organized by the ISF, the event began in 1974 in Wiesbaden, Germany. It used to be held every two years, but since 1990 it has taken place roughly every four years. The program includes 12 mandatory sports such as archery, athletics, boxing, chess, fencing, gymnastics, judo, karate, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, and wrestling. In addition, up to five optional sports are chosen by the host country for each edition (examples from 2018 include pétanque, road cycling, surfing, and golf).
Notable editions include 2018 in Morocco, which hosted more than 3,000 athletes from 58 countries—the largest to date and the first major youth multisport event held in Africa. The 2022 edition was held in Normandy, France. The event is headquartered in Brussels, Belgium. Website: isfsports.org.
