Working equitation
Working equitation is a horse sport that celebrates traditional riding styles from different countries and shows off old-style riding clothes and gear. The sport is run by the World Association for Working Equitation. It became an organized competition in 1996, with the first European championship held in Italy.
Competitions can be individual or team and usually have three or four parts.
World Championships began in 2002 in Beja, Portugal. Portugal won the team title, and Fabio Lombardo of Brazil won the individual title on Brilho do Rimo with 100 points.
The 2006 World Championship in Lisbon again saw Portugal win the team title, and David Duarte Oliveira of Portugal won the individual title on Mulato.
The 2011 championship took place in Lyon, France. Portugal won the team event, and Pedro Torres of Portugal won the individual title on Oxidado.
The 2014 World Championship was in Ebreichsdorf, Austria, with 28 individual riders from 10 countries and four national teams. Portugal won the team event, and the top four individuals were all from Portugal, led by Bruno Pica da Conceição on Trinco.
Portugal has also performed well at European events, including winning the team event at the 2010 European Championships.
