William Westerhold

William Westerhold (January 21, 1836 – May 12, 1910) was a Union Army officer and Medal of Honor recipient from the American Civil War. Born in Binde, Prussia, he moved to the United States and joined the Army from New York City in October 1861, serving in the 52nd New York Infantry. He started as a sergeant and was promoted to First Lieutenant a few days after his Medal of Honor action. On May 12, 1864, at Spotsylvania Court House in Virginia, Westerhold risked his life to capture the flag of the Confederate 23rd Virginia Infantry, for which he received the Medal of Honor. He mustered out with his regiment in July 1865. Westerhold died in New York City in 1910 at age 74.
