Navala

Navala is a traditional Fijian village in the Ba Highlands of Fiji’s Western Division. It is famous for more than 200 thatched bures, all built to the same size. The village is made up of three settlements joined together and is protected by surrounding mountains. It lies on the far side of a river that often floods, which keeps Navala fairly isolated from other towns. Visitors can enter the village for a small fee and take pictures. A nearby river brings rafters to the area, and there is bus service between Navala and the town of Ba. Navala dates back to the 19th century when people from the Nausori Highlands built a school there. Over the years, two main tribes in the village had disputes, including reports of cows being killed and several bures burned in land ownership conflicts involving people from Navatusila.
