Wibald (bishop of Auxerre)
Wibald (died 887) was the bishop of Auxerre from 879 until his death. He was a Frank from Cambrai, the son of Leutfrid and Doda. He studied liberal arts with John Scotus Eriugena at the palace school of King Charles the Bald after 847, and later served King Louis the Stammerer. In 879 the king made him bishop of Auxerre, and he was ordained on 5 April by Archbishop Ansegisus of Sens. He added two altars to the cathedral of Saint Stephen and tried to place the abbey of Saint Julian under the cathedral’s authority, but this did not take effect because he died early. He gave half the village of Chichery to fund four annual feasts in memory of his ordination, his death, Louis’s death, and the dedication of the two altars. He died on 12 May 887 in the church of Saint Clement and was buried there, even though he wished to be buried at home.
