Welcome to the Real World (Sick Puppies album)
Welcome to the Real World is the debut studio album by Australian rock band Sick Puppies. It was released in Australia on 3 September 2001 as an enhanced CD that included the music video for Every Day. Only 3,000 copies were pressed, sold only in Australia, which makes it a rare collector’s item. Some pressings also included the Every Day single.
The album runs about 54 minutes and features a mix of nu metal, rap metal, and alternative metal. It was released by Transistor Music and is the only Sick Puppies studio album to feature drummer Chris Mileski.
Background and singles: Sick Puppies entered the Triple J Unearthed competition in 2000 with the demo "Nothing Really Matters" and co-won the Sydney region, which helped them secure management and release the full album. The singles released before the album were "Nothing Really Matters" (demo, 2000), "Every Day" (April 30, 2001), and "Rock Kids" (July 30, 2001). Two music videos were made: one for the demo version of "Nothing Really Matters" (2000) and one for "Every Day," which accompanies the album. The "Nothing Really Matters" video uses live Sydney footage.
US release: In early 2016, Welcome to the Real World appeared in the United States on Apple Music/iTunes, even though there was no official band announcement. The singles Rock Kids and Every Day were also made available there.
Songs and writing: All tracks were written by Shimon Moore, Emma Anzai, and Chris Mileski. After this album, frontman Shimon Moore left the band and Fury released more material with a new singer, Bryan Scott.
Cover note: The album was originally going to include a humorous cover of Destiny’s Child's "Say My Name" with turntable samples and heavy bass, but it was not included due to the risk of a lawsuit. A leaked version of the cover has circulated online and is sometimes played at concerts.
