Walter J. Cookson (April 17, 1876 – June 11, 1936) was a Republican politician who served as the 42nd mayor of Worcester, Massachusetts. He was elected mayor on November 5, 1935, after several years on the Worcester School Committee. He served as mayor in 1936 but died of a heart attack on June 11, 1936, in his hotel room in Cleveland while attending the 1936 Republican National Convention. He was the last Republican to serve as Worcester’s mayor. Cookson Field, an 18-acre park near the College of the Holy Cross, was named in his honor. He was born in Pascoag, Rhode Island, and died in Cleveland, Ohio at age 60. He was preceded by John C. Mahoney and succeeded by John S. Sullivan.
