Harold Johnson Nature Reserve
Harold Johnson Nature Reserve is a small protected area on South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal north coast. It covers about 100 hectares (250 acres) and lies on the southern bank of the Tugela River, about 6 km from where the river flows into the sea. The reserve is managed by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. It teems with wildlife such as zebra, bushbuck, impala, blue duiker, red duiker, vervet monkey, slender mongoose, white-tailed mongoose, banded mongoose, and porcupine. More than 190 bird species have been seen here, and around 114 butterfly species have been recorded. Two national monuments sit inside the reserve: Fort Pearson and the Ultimatum Tree. In 1879, the British gave an ultimatum to the Zulu nation at the Ultimatum Tree, an event that helped spark the Anglo-Zulu War.
