Wally St Pier
Wally St Pier (Stanley Walter St Pier) was an English footballer and long-time West Ham United scout. He was born on 8 October 1904 in Beacontree Heath, Dagenham, England, and died in 1989 in Daventry, England (aged about 84–85). He played as a centre-half.
St Pier started his senior career with Ilford before joining West Ham United in April 1929. He made his first appearance for West Ham in October 1929 against Leicester City. He spent most of his time as a reserve to Jim Barrett and made 24 league appearances for West Ham, scoring no goals, before retiring from playing in 1932.
After retiring as a player, he became West Ham's chief scout under manager Charlie Paynter. Through his scouting network, he helped discover many famous players, including John Lyall, Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters, Pat Holland, Frank Lampard, Paul Brush, Alan Curbishley, Trevor Brooking and Mervyn Day, among others.
St Pier was given a testimonial in May 1975 and retired from West Ham in 1976 after 47 years of service to the club.
