Barbara G. Briggs
Barbara Gillian Briggs AM PSM (born 1934) is a leading Australian botanist. She has published or co-published about 205 plant names. Briggs helped shape the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group, which produced the APG system in 1998. She began working at the Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney in 1959 and earned her PhD from the University of Sydney in 1961. In 1994 she shared the Clarke Medal of the Royal Society of New South Wales with Craig Anthony Atkins. She received the Public Service Medal in 1998. In 2018 she was made a Member of the Order of Australia for her service to science, to documenting Australian flora, and to professional societies. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New South Wales. After retiring, she remains an Honorary Research Associate at the Sydney Botanic Gardens. A plant, Lomandra briggsiana, was named in her honour.
