WVFN
WVFN (730 AM) is a Lansing-area talk and sports radio station licensed to East Lansing, Michigan. It’s owned by Townsquare Media and broadcasts from studios on Pinetree Road in Lansing. The station runs 500 watts by day and 50 watts at night because 730 AM is a clear-channel frequency, so WVFN must power down after sunset.
Programming features include The Steve Gruber Show, a local sports program with Tim Staudt, and Michigan’s Big Show with Michael Patrick Shiels. The lineup also includes the Markley, Van Camp & Robbins show from Compass Media Networks, The Ramsey Show with Dave Ramsey, and Red Eye Radio. WVFN is an affiliate of the Detroit Tigers radio network and Grand Valley State Lakers football. It also airs select Michigan State University hockey and basketball games.
WVFN’s history goes back to 1965 when the station signed on as WVIC with a middle-of-the-road format, while its sister station WVIC-FM carried Beautiful Music. In 1968 the AM flipped to Top 40 and spent much of the 1970s simulcasting with WVIC-FM, which helped the FM station gain a large audience thanks to 24-hour stereo. In 1979 WVIC briefly aired Urban Contemporary during middays but continued the Top 40 simulcast later that year. Goodrich Broadcasting bought the pair in 1981; WVIC became WVGO with the Music of Your Life format (big band and standards). In 1983 the WVIC call letters returned and the station again simulcast Top 40 with WVIC-FM as “The New 73 AM.” The simulcast continued until 1992, when the station launched the current Sports Talk format as WVFN.
The WAAP call letters were briefly used in 1989 to avoid a cross-town rival, but WVIC calls soon returned. (Note: the WVFN call letters were previously used by a UNC Charlotte campus station from 1972 to 1976.) After sister station WJIM switched to sports-talk on December 1, 2025, WVFN adopted the branding Lansing 730 AM.
