5-MeO-2-TMT (also called 5-MeO-TMT or 2-Me-5-MeO-DMT) is a psychedelic chemical in the tryptamine family. It is taken by mouth and acts on the brain’s serotonin system. It was first made by Alexander Shulgin and described in his 1997 book TiHKAL.

Chemistry and pharmacology: It belongs to 2-alkyltryptamines and has a methoxy group at the 5 position with two methyl groups on the amine (N,N-dimethyl). It interacts with several serotonin receptors, especially 5-HT1A, 5-HT1D, 5-HT6, and 5-HT7, with less activity at 5-HT2A than some related compounds. The 2-methyl group helps keep it active when taken by mouth, unlike some similar substances.

Effects and duration: Reports describe a range of effects from relaxation and tingling to changes in perception and mood. Visual effects and time distortion may occur at higher doses. Other possible effects include sleep disturbance, nausea, and bodily sensations. Experiences vary widely with dose and the individual.

Legality: As of 2025, it is not explicitly scheduled in the United States or Canada, but could be controlled under analogue laws if intended for human use. In the United Kingdom it is Class A, and in Germany it falls under the NpSG (industrial/scientific use only).

Important: This is a high-level summary and not a guide to use or obtain this substance.
