Valeria Sorokina
Valeria Mihailovna Sorokina, born on 29 March 1984 in Reshetikha, Gorky Oblast, is a Russian badminton player who specialized in women’s and mixed doubles. She stands 1.72 meters tall.
Her career peaked with a world ranking of No. 4 in women’s doubles, achieved with partner Nina Vislova in January 2011, and No. 11 in mixed doubles with Aleksandr Nikolaenko in March 2012. Sorokina's most notable Olympic moment came at the 2012 London Games, where she and Vislova won the bronze medal in women’s doubles, making them Russia’s first Olympic badminton medalists.
In Europe, she won the gold medal in women’s doubles at the 2010 European Championships and earned bronze medals in 2008 and 2012. She also shone at the 2003 European Junior Championships, taking gold in girls’ doubles and bronzes in mixed doubles and the team event.
On the World Tour, Sorokina collected several BWF Grand Prix titles, including wins at the Russian Open and Dutch Open with Vislova and Nikolaenko. She claimed nine national titles in Russia before 2013. For her achievements, she was awarded the second class Medal of the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland.”
Sorokina’s success made her one of Russia’s most accomplished badminton players and a dominant figure in European badminton for over a decade.
