Lambretta 48
Lambretta 48
The Lambretta 48 is a small 48 cc moped built by Innocenti in 1954. It has a single-seat design and a two-stroke, single-cylinder engine producing about 1.7 horsepower at 5,000 rpm. Power comes from a Dell'Orto carburettor, and the engine drives a two-speed transmission via a rear chain. It has a trailing-link front suspension and a rear suspension with twin telescopic springs, with drum brakes on both wheels. The bike runs on 2.00 x 22 inch tyres, has a 42 inch wheelbase, and weighs about 44 kg (dry).
It was first shown at the 1954 Milan Show and later exhibited in London in 1956. The 1950s moped market was led by the NSU Quickly, and the Lambretta 48 was withdrawn from the UK market in 1959. It was also produced in India as API Lambretta, assembled from kits sent from Italy.
In 1966, Innocenti introduced the Lambrettino, a newer design with a rigid spine frame, a coil-sprung single seat, and a 39 cc engine. It used a single-speed automatic clutch, 18 x 2.00 inch tyres, weighed about 41 kg, and could reach around 24 mph with fuel economy around 200 mpg.
