VF-7 was a U.S. Navy fighter squadron formed on January 3, 1944, and disbanded on June 8, 1946. It was the second US Navy squadron to have the VF-7 designation. The squadron flew F6F Hellcats (F6F-3/5) and served with Carrier Air Group 7 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Hancock in the Atlantic Fleet. In July 1944, VF-7 received updated F6F-5 Hellcats at Naval Air Station Quonset and returned to the Hancock. By September 1944, Hancock and CVG-7 had moved to the Pacific Fleet. Hancock fought in the Philippines campaign (1944–45), including the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and also saw action at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. From February to September 1945, CVG-7 was based ashore at Naval Station Puget Sound and then at Naval Air Station Astoria.
