1899 in Russia

In 1899 Russia was ruled by Tsar Nicholas II, keeping an autocratic government. The country continued to modernize slowly, with more factories and a growing railway network helping cities expand. The government enforced strict control over politics and the press. Social tensions rose as workers demanded better conditions, and strikes happened in towns and cities. Despite these tensions, Russian culture, science, and literature continued to grow as part of the nation’s development. There were no major wars involving Russia that year.
