Upendra is a 1999 Kannada-language psychological drama thriller written and directed by Upendra. It stars Upendra, Raveena Tandon, Prema and Damini. The film uses allegory to explore four big human drives—ego, beauty, responsibility, and money—through the story of a selfish man and the women in his life.

Plot in simple terms
Naanu, a self-absorbed man who hates hypocrisy, pursues three women: Rathi, Swathi, and Keerthi. His actions reveal the tensions between truth, desire, and duty. A storyteller frames the tale and, through it, a deeper meaning is revealed: the four characters symbolize ego, beauty, responsibilities, and money. The story suggests that the ego must die for a person to grow, and Naanu ultimately renounces his own ego.

Cast and music
The film features Upendra, Raveena Tandon, Prema and Damini. The music was composed by Gurukiran, with lyrics by Upendra. The title is said to reflect the letters of the main characters’ names (U for Upendra, P for Prema, D for Damini, Ra for Raveena).

Release, reception, and legacy
Upendra was released on 22 October 1999 and runs 138 minutes. It earned about ₹15 crore at the box office and gained a cult following. It won the Filmfare Award for Best Film (Kannada) and Best Director (Kannada). The film was shown at international festivals, including the International Film Festival of India, and a Telugu-dubbed version was released later.

A sequel, Uppi 2, came out in 2015. The film is known for its bold, unconventional storytelling and its exploration of human ego and desires, presented through symbolic characters and a thought-provoking narrative.
