The University of Science and Technology Liaoning (USTL) is in Anshan, Liaoning. It is China’s oldest metallurgical university and now offers a broad range of fields beyond engineering. The school began in 1948 as the Anshan Institute of Iron and Steel, under the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry. It was renamed several times: in 1958 it became the Anshan Iron and Steel Institute, in 2002 Anshan University of Science and Technology, and in 2006 it took its current name, University of Science and Technology Liaoning. It became a doctoral degree–granting university in 2006.

Today, USTL covers about 1.84 million square meters and has 19 colleges with 59 undergraduate majors. It offers 3 first‑class doctoral programs, 13 second‑class doctoral programs, 14 first‑class master’s programs, 47 second‑class master’s programs, and 8 professional master’s programs. The university has national key disciplines in metallurgical engineering, inorganic non‑metallic material engineering, automation, and network engineering. The computer and software engineering department is a provincial key department, and the software engineering field is ranked among China’s top 60–80 by the Ministry of Education. About 18,000 students are enrolled, and the university participates in national education and research projects and has strong ties to industry.
