Setzer Gabbiani
Setzer Gabbiani is a charismatic gambler and one of the main characters in Final Fantasy VI (1994). He runs the Blackjack, an airship casino, and is famous for his calm, stylish personality. In the story, he initially plans to kidnap the opera star the group is pursuing, but he is won over to the heroes’ side after realizing the Gestahlian Empire’s threat to his way of life. He joins the party, driven by his own desires and a growing sense of justice.
Setzer’s backstory centers on a fierce race of airships with his late friend Darill. After Darill dies in an accident, Setzer discovers her tomb later in the adventure and reveals how he rebuilt her ship to honor her memory. This personal tragedy helps humanize him and deepens his bond with the group as they continue to fight Kefka.
In gameplay, Setzer is a unique fighter who uses dice, darts, and thrown playing cards—the gambler’s toolkit. His flair for risk and style is reflected in his appearance: a pale, sharp-featured man with long white hair, wearing a black suit, lavender boots, a blue sash, and a white ascot. His look and attitude have made him a memorable icon among the Final Fantasy cast.
Setzer is not limited to Final Fantasy VI. He appears in other titles such as Kingdom Hearts II (voiced by Crispin Freeman in English and Ryōtarō Okiayu in Japanese), Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, Final Fantasy Record Keeper, and Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia. He’s also featured in merchandise and special in-game outfits, like a Gold Saucer look in Final Fantasy XIV.
Overall, Setzer is praised for his charm, humor, and growth. Though some view him as a “scumbag” at first, his alliance with the party reveals a deeper loyalty and courage, especially in the later memory moments that reveal his quieter, more human side. His distinct style and development from a self-centered gambler to a trusted ally have helped him endure as a fan favorite.
